What Size
Mattress Is Right for You?
There are four standard sizes of
mattress available today: twin (or single), double (or full),
queen and king. Your choice will depend on several factors: the
size of your bedroom whether one or two people will sleep in
the bed an dhow much sleeping space you like.
Although there are some variations, mattresses usually
conform to the following measurements:
Twin mattress - 39" x 75"
Double mattress - 54" x 75"
Queen mattress - 60" x 80"
King size mattress - 76" x 78"
California or Western king size mattress - 72" x
84" |
You should also know that the depth, or thickness of the
various size mattresses varies. The average is 9 - 12" deep,
while pillow-top or European top mattresses can be as much as
16" deep. Make sure you know the exact dimensions of your
mattress when you buy sheets, as you'll want the bottom sheet
to fit snugly around the corners of the mattress.
Let's consider the various size mattresses to help you make
your choice.
Twin, or
Single
At 39" x 75", these beds are ideal for children. They are
also fine for some adults though, and people often use them for
guest bedrooms. Twin beds can also be found in an extra long
size, with an added 5% in length that can accommodate taller
adults.
Double, or
Full
Double beds are theoretically designed for two people, but
in practice they are a bit cramped for two. Each person has
only 27" of sleeping space.
Queen
Queen size beds provide an extra 6" in width and 5" in
length. This may not sound significant, but in fact it can make
a big difference in sleep comfort.
King
Finally, if you have the space and the budget, you might go
for the luxury of the king size bed. Many people first
experience the king size bed in a fine hotel, and like it so
much they buy their own.
Whichever you choose, make sure you consider all the factors
discussed in other articles on this site, as well as the size
of your mattress.
Sleep well!
